What is the lost wax method?
Our Bronze Pelican Sculptures are cast using the traditional lost wax method. In ancient China, this method has been used in bronze casting. The lost wax method first carves the to be cast (wax pattern) with a waxy material mixed with beeswax, rosin and butter, then pours the clay clarified clay on the wax pattern, then sprinkles quartz sand, broken plant fibers, sawdust, etc. When dry, pour in clay and yellow clay and stir in clarified clay, then sprinkle with sand. After doing this several times outside the wax mold, heat the shells over the fire. The wax melts into a liquid when heated and disappears from the shell. Afterwards, the die shell is sintered and the molten metal liquid is poured into the die shell for casting. Once cooled, knock off the mold shell to get a cast that is the same shape as the wax mold.
